We had fun with our camera a few weekends ago and John got some good shots of the boys. I finally see that they are looking more and more alike. I just love their round cheeks (from me) and large bottom lip (from Daddy). Don't you just want to squeeze them?

We also miraculously FINALLY got some shots of Evan smiling. Seriously! It's been 15 months and we only have a handful of them. It was a team effort to get the charming smile, but we got it!

He knows he's Mr. Cool Dude. Notice my hand tickling the back of his neck?

And here are the brothers in the box. Yes, we have a jack-in-the-box! They love climbing in and out of this thing and it makes clean up a cinch.

I love this one because it shows Jack using his lip muscles and you can see his beautiful deep blue eyes.

Jack's Milestone: Since about April, Jack has been going on the potty sporadically. I'm not pushing it as he still doesn't mind being wet and only tells me while he's going pee, but at least he will go #2 on the potty occasionally. That alone is a huge accomplishment and we are very proud of him! I caught the 'potty party' on film. I know it's blurry, but it's such a great moment.

Evan's Milestone: He is now a stable full-time walker. Watch out!

For my hubby's Father's Day gift, the boys and I took him to Guitar Center so he could get a new amp. He's been eying it for a year now. They were having a Father's Day sale. Since we were there, we wanted Jack to try out the drums. We always knew he'd be the drummer in our family band. This just proves it and made for one proud Da-da! Evan will be the singer and bassist then.

Evan had a great time at his 1st birthday party. I'm a little late in updating the blog, but here are a few photos. It was a wonderful party with family. John manned the grill, Costco was my best friend and the weather was enjoyable.

This year has gone by way too fast. One year ago today, I was being induced so we could meet our second son. Those first months were rough with you wanting to be held all day long. You've always been one that needs extra convincing, whether it's solid food, sleeping through the night or drinking from a straw. You're constantly keeping me on my toes. Now at the age of one (oh my), you are close to walking (please take your time), you can cruise with ease, get on and off a ride toy, tackle your brother, clap, give kisses when you want, walk holding my hands and sign "dog", "dad", "eat" and "hat." You don't quite sleep through the night, with one nightly waking between 2-5am. You have a sweet personality and a charming smile that gets you want you want. Girls, beware! You are a dare devil, always standing on top of the bike. It's too boring just to ride. You love to be thrown in the air and laugh hysterically for more. You have become an adorably charming little boy and adore your big brother. I am amazed at how easy Jack can make you laugh. You already have your own inside jokes. Happy Birthday sweet baby boy! We love you, our third percentile peanut!

It has been FOREVER since I have blogged. Between Evan still not sleeping through the night, both boys being sick for a week and a hectic jammed-packed therapy schedule, blogging has taken a back seat. Here is a glimpse of what we have been up to lately.

I know I give Evan a hard time, but it's taken me awhile to get used to a child so serious. Compared to Jack, any second born child is bound to seem serious. I must say though, when Evan sheds his somber look and his smile peeks through, he is seriously the most handsome boy in the whole world. I can already imagine the hearts he's going to break from the girls who don't even stand a chance. I feel so lucky to be blessed with such handsome, intelligent and playful boys, that includes you too hubby.

Haircut Time

This past weekend we took the boys in for a haircut. This was Evan's FIRST haircut. We kept it long, so it wouldn't stick up, but trimmed all over. He looks like such a little man.

I love this place we go to. Jack required two ladies to distract him, so he wouldn't shake the car's steering wheel. They sang to him and he got some major attention. Besides throwing every toy they offered him on to the floor, he did an excellent job.

They even offered to take a family photo. Love them!

I would like to add that I am SUPER happy we did not cut Evan's hair sooner. We kept it longer in back and it lays down finally. He also has some red in his hair. Wow, cool!

At 6:59am this morning, Jack Christopher turned TWO years old. I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. My little bitty baby has grown into a toddler, right before my very eyes. It's like I blinked and BOOM, he's two already. Jack is still a happy, easy going, independent, eager to please little boy. He loves music, signing, dancing, Baby Singing Time and going to the park. Just over two months ago he started walking and he has progressed so quickly. I just watch each day in amazement. Jack, you have made our lives better and we are forever grateful.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month - Post 7

My son Jack has Down syndrome and because of this diagnosis, from birth to three years old he qualifies for State provided therapy services. Children with Down syndrome have developmental delays and with therapy, the goal is to enhance the child's development and provide support and assistance to the child and family. Jack will be two years old (Already? Wow!) next weekend and he receives six therapy services a week. He receives Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Developmental Therapy, Aqua Therapy and attends a Developmental playgroup. Each therapy is an hour and occurs at home, except for Aqua which we drive to and it's a 45 minute class and the playgroup is an hour and a half and we drive there as well.

This is what we are currently working on:

Physical Therapy: Jack is working building his core muscle strength. The sessions focus on walking, standing, balancing, squatting to stand, bear crawl to stand, walking with an object in his hands and crawling obstacles. Jack complains the most during Physical therapy. Jack is walking more and more, maybe about 70/30 walking to crawling now. He also wears SMO orthotics whenever he wears his shoes.

Occupational Therapy: Jack is working on fine motor skills and shoulder and hand strength. During the sessions, he works with pulling, pushing and smashing Play dough, walking wheel-barrel to pick up and place objects, building blocks, laying on his tummy and uses pointer finger to push buttons and working on pincher grasp, placing small balls into a cup and drawing vertical lines.

Speech Therapy: Jack is working on speech and communication. The sessions focus on naming objects with sign language and words, mimicking sounds, receptive language, labeling body parts and putting sounds to actions. While Jack's only speaking word is "Dad" so far, the Therapist is very happy with his broad sign language vocabulary and knowledge of receptive language. Some of the session is also spent exercising Jack's mouth, tongue and bite with a chewy tube.

Developmental Therapy: Jack is working on play skills. During the sessions, they work on appropriate toy usage, puzzles, shape sorters, threading large beads on a string, reading books and stacking blocks. Developmental Therapy is all encompassing as includes most of the other therapies. The goal is to work on social skills. Sometimes that aspect of play has to be taught, but Jack seems to pick things up very quickly.

Aqua Therapy: This is Jack's favorite therapy. He rares signs "all done" and he loves the water. The sessions focus on standing and walking on a platform in the water, surfing on the platform with it rocking back and forth, kicking his legs, shifting weight on a floating raft, balancing on a noodle, lifting foam bar bells, pushing off his legs from the sides of the pool and balancing on his arms with his body held in the air. It's funny to think back at his first three aqua therapies. The therapist had to sing during the entire session and I had to be in the water to calm him down. Now he loves it and he doesn't even realize he's getting great therapy.

Developmental Playgroup: We have only attended one class. This is a stepping stone that leads right into school, with some structured activities and some play time. It was so cute to see Jack in a school type setting. He did very well and the therapist said he was ready for a class like this. He participated and was interested in what the class was doing. The class has 5 kids total and Jack is the youngest. I think it is great so Jack can see what the bigger kids are doing and he will learn from them. And the other kids can learn from Jack as well. He is always eager to please and participate.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

My son has Down syndrome. It's okay to say the word "Down syndrome." I've met some people that whisper the word like it's forbidden or wrong. It is a genetic condition. It is not a disease. You can't catch it. You are born with it. Let's say it all aloud together. Down syndrome, Down syndrome, Down syndrome! Now don't you feel better? Down syndrome is beautiful and nothing to shy away from or be ashamed of.

Since we're are talking about the word "Down syndrome," let's go over some appropriate usage. Pretend this is English class. Did you like English class? Hope so, because it's time for a lesson. Down syndrome was first discovered in 1866 by an English physician named J. Langdon Down. Dr. Down did not have Down syndrome, he merely discovered it. Therefore (English students are we paying attention?) the word is Down syndrome NOT Down's syndrome. No apostrophe is necessary.

Now on to lesson two. Down syndrome is a genetic condition. It does not define a person. Therefore, when speaking about a person with Down syndrome, please use 'person first' language. I will give you some examples. Someone would say "that boy with Down syndrome has beautiful almond shaped eyes." NOT "that Down's boy has beautiful almond shaped eyes." Those words "down's boy" just irk me and it just doesn't feel right. Please remember to put the child first, not the genetic condition.

Almost done, lesson three. I know many people still say the word "Downs." This just may be a personal preference, but I will never say that word. My son has Down syndrome, not Downs. Used as an adjective, the word "down" means unhappy or gloomy. I guess it just sounds so sad, leaving off the 'syndrome' part. That's too bad Dr. Normal or Dr. Perfect didn't discover Down syndrome. Then our wonderful kids could be called "Normals" or "Perfects."

Last lesson, lesson four. Never ever ever ever EVER speak, utter, whisper, shout, type, text, twitter or scream out the R-word. For those that don't know which word I am referring to, it's the awful hurtful word retarded. I hate even typing it. In today's society many many people use that word to describe something they did as stupid or dumb. Really, so a person who has an intellectual disability is stupid? My son Jack is dumb? I don't think so! Jack can sign over 25 words, he can learn a new toy with just one demonstration and he can understand tons of receptive language. Please remove this word from your vocabulary. It is hurtful and inconsiderate. The 400,000 individuals with Down syndrome and their friends and family would appreciate it. It's all about respect. And they deserve to be treated equally.

Hope you enjoyed English class boys and girls. I always did want to be a teacher. Thank you for letting me live out my dream.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

For those that don't know, my first born son Jack was diagnosed with Down syndrome on October 30, 2008, just a few hours after he was born. The nurses and John noticed that he showed some common physical characteristics of Down syndrome and genetic testing confirmed it a few days later. We did not know beforehand that he would have Down syndrome. I'm not even sure I had ever seen a person with Down syndrome before my son was placed in my arms, but the amount of love I immediately felt for my son could have made my heart explode. This was our baby. This was who we made and I only saw perfection. Once I learned of the diagnosis, I was amazed to find my love multiply by millions. I knew his life would have more obstacles and judgments than most, and I loved him that much more for it.

Although Jack has Down syndrome, that is not what defines him. He is an almost two year old who laughs, smiles, dances, acts goofy, gets jealous, crawls, climbs, throws, mimics, waves, climbs in your lap, gives hugs, blows kisses and sits adorably on a stool. Jack is learning to walk, communicates through sign language and has beautiful almond eyes full of soul. I would not change a thing about him. We love him just the way he is, just like the video sings below. Please click on the link below.

Sleepless Past Month

I haven't blogged in awhile, not including video posts. This past month has been pretty much awful for Evan's night time sleeping, so in turn, it's been awful for me, of course. He's a great napper, but this month we've had to deal with him learning to roll one way, getting stuck on his belly, screaming, trying to wean from 2 night time feedings, trying to wean night time feedings all together, trying a cry-it-out method, trying a sleep sack, trying a swaddle and then finally adding back one night time feeding. He was waking up every 1 1/2 hour to 3 hours. It was horrible! One night I even slept with my arm over the bassinet holding his sleep sack, so he wouldn't roll over and get stuck and scream. I'm pretty sure that's what kinked my shoulder muscle/tendon so much that I went to the ER. Although the ER was pretty much a waste since nothing was found and Tylenol is my only cure. Needless to say, the night times have been quite tough on me, but I think I finally figured it out. We're going to stick to the Kiddopotamus Swaddle until at least 6 months old (so he can't roll and get stuck and scream) and keep with the one night time feeding. I guess he wasn't ready to go all night without nursing, or I just tried too many things at once. Anyway, we've had a much better night the past 4 nights, so I think we're good and I'm not changing anything anymore of listening to any doctor that tells me a four month old can sleep through the night! Sorry to complain so much, but thanks for listening.

These are a few other things we've been up to this past month.

Trying some rice cereal with Evan.

He did not like it and refused to open his mouth after one forced bite. I guess we'll wait until he's 6 months old, which is only a month away.

Jack has the need to try out every toy that I bring out for Evan. He likes to dive tummy first onto the bouncer. It hasn't broken yet. Here he is just chillin' in Evan's bouncer.

They like to watch Baby Signing Time together.

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend. This weekend has been great to catch up on things. I also just finished reading my first book in 3 years, Lost & Found. It was pretty good and it only took me a couple weeks. I'm glad to know I still know how to read. =)

Jam Packed Weekend

This past weekend was so busy, but also so much fun! My sister and her boyfriend flew in Thursday night and we drove straight to the lake and made it just in time to get a few hours on the lake before the sunset curfew. Here are some shots. You would never have guessed that these two aren't wakeboarding every weekend!

The next event was a birthday party for my sis. My Mom, step Dad and Grandma were also in town. We are RARELY together to celebrate, so of course we partied it up, Mexican Fiesta style.

The final event was Evan's Baptism. I was so thrilled to remember the tripod, so we could get a nice photo of everyone.

You will never guess, Evan didn't even mutter a whimper during the entire Baptism Service. I could not believe it. If bets would have been placed, I would have lost. I was certain he was going to cry when the water was poured over his head. He is definitely no longer colicy! He was such a sweet sleeping angel.

I wish I would have gotten a close up shot of Jack. He looked so sharp in a blue shirt and snazzy vest. Gerry, you are right, he COULD be a model.

I love my family so much!

What's in a Name?

This is my Great Uncle Evan. That's me on the end wearing my little Evan at my Great Uncle Evan's 90th Birthday party. I think you can guess where we got our Evan's name from. When he's older, we will likely call him Van, just like his Great Great Uncle's nickname. My Great Uncle Evan is 100% Greek and doesn't he just LOOK like the coolest guy ever? And he is!

And not to leave anyone out, that is my beautiful Great Aunt Matina next to him and handsome Grandpa Francis.

Another reason why Evan was the perfect name (besides it seeming fit because of the serious looks he already gives) was because of the name meaning. John means "God is Gracious.' Jack means 'God is Gracious' and not to leave anyone out, Evan means 'God is Gracious."

Just perfect if you ask me.

Lake Weekend

Last weekend we went up to the Lake. It was unseasonably hot, so we spent most of the time in the shade. Except for poor John who got his shoulders quite toasted. And there's something about the water that is so relaxing and yet tiring at the same time. We all went to bed early after we watched some fireworks. Evan even slept well: eight hours one night and then (2) six hour stretches the next. OMG! I should have taken a picture of THAT for evidence, because he hasn't done it since (of course!) and I don't have a single photo of him from the entire weekend. Woops! Poor Evan. Number two always gets the shaft.

You are an amazing father. I love watching you with Jack, without a care in the world or shyness about doing anything goofy. It makes me so happy watching you two crack each other up. You are a generous husband, always complimenting me and making me feel good. Thank you for working hard for our family and always being happy to come home. Happy (belated) Father's Day!

Evan is now 2 months old already. He weighs 11lbs 6.5oz and is 22 1/4" long. Jack was nearly 4 months old at that weight! Yikes!

I know it looks like he is trying to eat his foot. But, here is Jack showing him some brotherly kisses.

The only way I can get Evan to smile is to take a side shot. He likes the exaggerated baby talk and yes, for those that are wondering, he is still colicy.

And I have to share this photo. Jack can now finally hold his own straw cup without handles. What a big boy! Of course, he doesn't yet show restraint. He likes to drink the whole cup in a matter of minutes. And then of course proceed to wet through his whole outfit. Luvs diapers stink!

I think we've got ourselves a theme here. I guess the leisurely stroll wears him out. Time sure goes by fast and Jack is growling so quickly. Next year, we hope to get some action shots of Jack in the bouncer, walking in the Dash for Down syndrome and maybe one of him sleeping of course too.

Oh, and on an 'Evan' note. He slept for almost 5 hours straight last night. Of course the next time he was awake was two hours after that. But maybe we are moving into a new trend here. Or maybe I just jinxed myself for typing this.

Today was the second time we participated in the GiGi's Playhouse 1 mile walk. Surprisingly, it didn't rain and we had a nice time. Thank you to Grandpa Gerry, Grandpa Sue, Grandpa Steve and Grandma Lesley for coming out to walk with Team Jack! We reached our $1000 goal, so a HUGE thank you to all of you who donated. We could not have done it without you.

Little Milestones

Jack has made so much progress since Christmas it feels like. This is just some of what he has been up to.

He can push a car appropriately

He can bear crawl

He can use a toy walker
(although PT doesn't approve of toy)

He can clap for a split second while standing

He can cruise along high objects

He can peek in on little brother

If I had to guess, I'd guess Jack would be walking by the time he is two. But no pressure Jack. When you are ready, we know you will do it.

Two and a half years old is about the average for kids with Down syndrome to walk. Although, Jack's girlfriend Maggie walked at 18 months old. She's setting records! But really folks, it doesn't matter when your beautiful child walks, because it's not like it goes on their resume. =)

Doctor Well Checks

This morning I took both boys to the doctor for their 1 month and 18 month appointments. Me, alone with my double wide awesome new stroller, which came in very handy. When it was Evan's turn for weight check, I strapped Jack into the stroller with just a diaper on. It was a cute site and my only option, since I wasn't about to have him crawl around on the floor or take a dive off the exam table. He looked so cute there with only a diaper and not a care in the world. Sorry I don't have a picture. Then of course when it was Jack's turn, Evan whaled the whole time. I kept having to lean in close to the doc, just so I could hear what he was saying. It turns out though, I am not crazy and Evan DOES have colic. It's nice to have an explanation, even though there is no cure besides time. Evan should be much happier and less stressed/cranky in 12 -15 weeks they say. God only hopes! Five down, ten to go.

Here are the stats for the day. Both boys are growing like weeds!

Jack: 30 3/4" tall, 23lbs (he's on the typical growth charts - go Jack!)

Evan: 21 7/8" tall, 10lbs

I looked back at Jack's weight and he wasn't 10lbs until 3 months old (wowwa!), but they were the same height at 1 month old.

Happy Mother's Day to Moms of Special Children

Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit. This year, nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of disabled children. Did you ever wonder how these women were chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over Earth, selecting his instruments for propagation, with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs his angels to take notes in a giant ledger.

"Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron saint...Cecilia."

"Rutledge, Carrie, twins. Patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity."

Finally, He passes a name to an angel and smiles. "Give her a child with a disability."

The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."

"Exactly. Could I give a child with a disability a mother who doesn't know laughter? That would be cruel."

"But does she have patience?" asks the angel.

"I don't want her to have too much patience or she'll drown in a sea of self pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it. I watched her today, she has that sense of self and independence so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has his own world. She has to make him live in her world, and that's not going to be easy."

"But Lord, I don't think she believes in you."

God smiles. "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness."

The angel gasps. "Selfishness, is that a virtue?"

God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes she is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet but she is to be envied."

Aqua Therapy

I had been meaning to get Aqua Therapy pictures for awhile now. Thanks Mom and John for taking the photos. Jack loves the water!

You can see out through a glass window to the busy corridor. Jack likes to say hello to everyone passing in the halls. This is his version of "hello." One arm up showing a fist and the head cocked to the side. So cute! His newest addition to the "hi" is first he points at the person and then he waves "hi." Kinda like he's saying "hey you...yes you...I am saying hi to you, now tell me hi back."

Jack just started the foam bar bell raises a few weeks back. He is now coordinated enough to use both arms simultaneously. Go Jack!

First Week

Well, reinforcements finally went home (aka my Mom) and we are on our own. The day went smoothly and we are finally settling into a routine, of sorts. Both me and the two boys napped for over 2 hours today, while John did some yard work. It was heaven, I must say! I hope that nap trend continues, because Evan doesn't sleep much at night yet. He sleeps off and on, sometimes eating every 45 minutes and then I usually bring him in to bed next to me from 4am on. Then of course he sleeps until the morning. He likes the warmth and to snuggle, but I don't get sound sleep, always worrying about swashing him.

I have called in some help for this week, since I was told not to hold Jack for two weeks. I've already broken that rule today, but I need to try and take it easy. I feel so much better than after I had Jack. It's amazing the difference. Time to go relax as Jack is in bed and Evan is snoozing next to John's Mario Kart action.

Happy Birthday Baby Boy!

Evan James was born April 23rd at 5:45pm. He came into this world weighing 7lbs, 13oz and 21" long. He has a full head of dark hair, long fingers and looks just like Daddy's baby pictures. We are getting settled in at home and loving our new family of four!

I had been signing "baby" and pointing to my belly for the last few months. When Jack came into the delivery room he signed "baby" for the very first time, just for his new baby brother. It was very cool!

It finally arrived....no, not baby #2, my big handmade bag I have been patiently waiting for. I got a gift certificate (thank you sister) for my birthday. I love all the homemade purses at Retrofied, so it took me forever to decide on a bag style, fabric and then add fun options like hidden pockets and inside key hooks. I love the finished product! I plan to use it as a toy bag to take to Grandparents' homes, weekend lake bag and possibly my delivery bag. =)

36 Weeks Along

Today I had my 36 week appointment with a doctor visit, NST and ultrasound. The baby weighs 6lbs and 7oz, which is 5oz bigger than Jack was. Not bad. I would have guessed a lot more, since I feel much bigger this time around. They want me to come in twice a week now for NST's and to check fluid levels. The plan is to induce April 30th (exactly 18 months between the boys) unless of course, baby boy decides to make his appearance early. I would post an ultrasound photo, but they are awful and look creepy showing the eye sockets. You will just have to wait to see the real thing. Just a few weeks left! These last few months have really gone by fast.

Seven interesting things about me...

1. I grew up in Kansas from fifth grade on. Every time we traveled on vacation, people always asked if we owned a television and lived on a farm. The answers are of course YES to the television and NO to the farm.

2. I love my big expanded immediate family (Mom, step-dad, Dad, step-Mom, sister, step-sister, step-brothers, half-brother and half-sister) and of course all the in-laws too! This is why I want four kids. I love big families. The more the merrier!

3. I learned to sew in 7th grade Home Ec class. Back then I made scrunchies and pillows, sassy I know. These days I like to make cute applique shirts for my son. My Mom also helped me out by giving me my natural sewing abilities.

4. I rarely get sick (knock on wood). The first ever antibiotic I took was after I gave birth to Jack.

5. I love meeting new people and making new friends. It probably helped having to make new friends in each city we moved (Illinois, Texas, Connecticut and Kansas). I especially love all the Moms I have met through my perfect son Jack with that extra special chromosome. I truly believe these Moms I have grown so close to (and you know who you are) will be in my life forever.

6. I met my husband at the only interview and only company I got offered a job after I graduated from college. He sat at the desk right next to me and we shared a center island work area. At first he thought I was snooty. And I thought he was obnoxious. Obviously we both changed our initial first impression and I am very thankful they hired me!

7. And last but not least......today is my birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

How to Make Applique Shirts

A few people have asked me how to get those onesies I made. John thinks I should sell them, but when exactly would I have the time? It look me months just to do 4 shirts, so I will just tell you how to make them.

1. Buy shirt/onesie you like.
2. Buy fabric(s) and thread you like and make sure they are thin rather than thick.
3. On the back of the fabric, trace the design you want remembering that it will be reversed when turned over.
4. Glue fabric to shirt with washable fabric glue.
5. Sew around the outside of pattern to make design secure.
6. Done!

Applique help:
An easy way to get an applique design is to look online and print one out. To make a shirt like the "Big Bro" one I made, use Microsoft Word to get the lettering you like and cut them out to trace on fabric. The letters must be traced on the front of the fabric, unless you have mirrored the letters. I like to trace mirrored letters on the back with pencil, so you don't have any pencil marks on the front of the fabric.

Thread help:
You can either match the fabric or choose a contrasting stitch.

Sewing help:
Stitch styles that look nice are straight stitch, zigzag stitch or pin stitch. And always always always test on a scrap piece of fabric!

Gluing help:
Make sure to put something in between the two layers of shirt, otherwise the glue will stick the two layers of shirt together.

I have searched far and wide for the best straw cup with handles for my son. Trust me, I have looked everywhere! I finally found something Jack and I really like. It's the Combi Straw Cup and although it is rather pricey, it is far better than anything I have seen and well worth the money.

Combi Straw Cup

Pros:
1. No leaking
2. Easy clean
3. Lid closes tight for easy travel
4. Contoured handles
5. Lightweight
6. No straw biting needed to start flow of liquid

Cons:

1. Pricey at $13

I use the Combi cup for milk during meals and then I use the Munchkin Straw Cup for juice/water outside of mealtime. Since the Munchkin cup does not have handles and is heavier, I help Jack hand over hand and hold the cup with him. When he is stronger and a bit older, I am hoping he can hold it on his own (and not toss it across the room). Here is the cup.

Now for beginner straw cup recommendations, I like the Rubbermaid Juice Box and the Honey Bear. I call these beginning straw cups because you are able to squeeze the liquid into your child's mouth for them to understand the objective, before they are able to actually use the straw themselves. I personally only used the Rubbermaid one, but many of Jack's friends love the Honey Bear cup. The key to teaching your child how to drink from a straw is repetition, repetition, repetition! I started Jack on a the Rubbermaid Juice box filled with water when Jack was 9 months old.

Nuby Straw Cup with handles - NO

This is a straw cup I considered buying, until I saw the tip of the straw. You have to bite the straw to get the liquid out, which does not teach the proper straw drinking technique. I would NOT recommend this straw cup.

Sippy Cups - NO

And for those of you wondering why I just don't use a sippy cup, since that's all that is sold in the stores. Drinking from a straw promotes a closed mouth drinking method, which is much more strengthening for those kids that have low-tone. Sippy cups promote open mouth drinking and only use muscles in the tongue to get the liquid out. Drinking from a straw teaches the correct drinking methods and erases confusion from going from bottle, to sippy cup, to open cup. Now for the typically developing kids out there, it's not the end of the world to use a sippy cup, but even for my baby #2, I plan to go straight to the straw cup from breastfeeding. Bye Bye Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is over, so now time to change my blog background yet again. It's called "lollipops" which I found appropriate since I can no longer enjoy a lollipop due to gestational diabetes. When I think about it though, it's really not that bad, it's just easy to complain about since all I crave is sweets. I thought of another benefit of having gestational diabetes. I get 2 more ultrasounds to check the size of the baby. If I didn't have GD, then I would have to wait until Jack's brother is born. That's fun to say "Jack's brother."

On Saturday we went to the Crawlers group at GiGi's Playhouse. It's always fun to see our friends and we always get great strengthening tips from the therapist that runs the group. Straight from there, we went to our first session of Sign Language. The class was just okay. It's getting extremely difficult to keep Jack still and to chase after him with a seven month bump! (Check out the "Sign Language" link on the side of the page under "Baby Things We Love." Very cool!) In the afternoon we shopped a little and everywhere we went, the salespeople kept saying they wanted to keep Jack. No way! Hands off people! =) He is a very good shopper. To celebrate Valentine's Day, as a family of three, we went out to our favorite Mexican restaurant. Jack loves the dim lights, waving to all the people and dancing his head to the mariachi band. I could not ask for better people to spend the day with.

I went in yesterday for my 28 week glucose screening. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with Jack and have a 50% chance of having it again. As you've probably guessed from the title post, yep, I am gestational diabetic yet again! Booooooooo! That's what I have to say about that! I tested 8 points higher than the passing number and they would technically require me to come in for the three hour glucose test, but I told them in advance that I was NOT participating in that! Heck no! Three hours of yucky sugar drinks and then having your blood drawn three times. I would pass out for sure! No way! So, now I have to test my glucose levels (and live on a diabetic diet) for the next two weeks, until my next appointment when they can see my numbers and then MAYBE I won't have to test FIVE times a day if I am able to manage it okay. Yuck! Boooooooooooo! Those two delicious chocolate chip cookies that I had last night, will be my last until after baby delivery. Then, bring on the sweets!!!!!! I miss the cookies already. I love you chocolate. Good bye for now. I will see you soon.

On a GOOD note. I will probably only gain 2 more pounds for the rest of my pregnancy.
